The Cure II: The Dark Cure by Jeff Campbell (Book Review)

The Cure II

The second in a four-part series following Ethan Cole, a man who accidentally discovers his blood has an enzyme that can cure all maladies and wounds. Cole strives to keep his family and friends safe from the villainous Arc corporation, a shadowy medical group determined to use Cole for their own evil intentions. Cole was injected with an experimental serum created by Arc to enhance human abilities. The serum had always killed subjects prior to Cole, but his blood bonded with it, making him a super-enhanced man that continues to evolve as his very genetic breakdown grows over time.

Cole puts his life on the line by keeping his people safe, but also by covertly moving around the country to quietly help those in need of his blood. He cures the sick, heals the wounded, and gives people something we all desperately seek: HOPE. His blood cannot survive outside of his body for cloning, and that makes Cole the most hunted man on Earth.

Jeff Campbell was born on a Tuesday in March in El Paso, Texas. A man of simple means with a complex mind, he previously wrote Catholic Grade School Tales: The Good, the Bad, and the OMG!, an autobiography recounting his youth in Catholic school. Campbell loves his family, his dogs, alpacas, and the Tennessee Titans.

My Review

The Arc isn’t done seeking Cole, whom it wishes to destroy. Targeting others, The Arc does its best to destroy what it created. Cole is secure and keeping those he cares about safe. He puts his life on the line to help the sick, the injured, and the ones who need it most. Why keep this serum to himself? He feels the obligation to help others. When a woman by the name of Emily is targeted, she learns the truth about what is behind the Arc.

In the second book in the series, Campbell shows us that what is dead never stays buried. What mission was started isn’t easily stopped. The Arc and those behind it won’t stop. It doesn’t care who or what is collateral damage. There is only one mission, Cole.

The characters were both named and unnamed. I was particularly drawn to Emily in the beginning because it felt like we were along for the ride. Rachel is my favorite because she commands respect and makes herself known as a leader. The book was a quick read, a jam-packed adventure, and left us reeling and wondering what would happen next.

Look out for Book 3!
